Q&A: Keeping Your Maiden Name
By Peggy Post

Q & A

In response to your inquiries, WeddingChannel.com's etiquette expert Peggy Post has chosen to address this interesting and complex question.

I'm planning on keeping my maiden name, but definitely want people to know that I'm married. Is it acceptable to use "Mrs." with my maiden name?

Actually, the title "Ms." is what you should use with your maiden name -- for the simple reason that it is not your married name. Once you get to know those with whom you correspond, they'll realize that you are married and using your maiden name. For one thing, your wedding ring will be a clear indication of your marital status. Or, if you get to know a business associate only over the telephone, perhaps you'll occasionally discuss personal matters. Maybe you'll find yourself referring to your husband, in which case the other person will know you're really a "Mrs." Finally, the title "Ms." has become an acceptable mainstay of our language. It is often used when addressing both married and unmarried women, especially in the business world.
